L’Oreal
Intertwining Beauty & Business
A glamorous partnership with the world’s leading cosmetics company, L’Oréal, led to the conception of a fluid design that promotes a fresh and invigorating workplace experience. The flowing nature of L’Oréal’s new headquarters possesses river-like characteristics, being both a connector of places and a means of transportation. Like most bodies of water, rivers are a landmark of settlement, densification, and recreation. The river that flows through the project connects the central hubs and serves as the main body of movement through the space.
The circulatory design allows for change and connectivity amongst employees that inhabit the space. Unassigned seating grants personnel the freedom to choose their work setting and select spaces suited for individual purposes. The central areas of connection allow for activity-based work and communal collaboration. Whimsical and tranquil spaces like the urban garden and the barking lot alleviate office burnout and promote wellness in the workplace. Influenced by California culture, L’Oréal’s unique Los Angeles headquarters is a breath of fresh air that is transcendent and timeless. Its bright and lively design reflects the fierce and charismatic company culture that continues to dominate the beauty industry.
The projects commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and sustainability is reflective of Blitz’s dedication to partnering with clients to build a better future. Through strategic planning and resource management, an emphasis on natural materials and wellness spaces, and integrated placemaking and wayfinding we were able to provide L’Oreal with a campus that is both holistic and diverse, meeting the needs of individuals and departments with the same level of detail and care.

A Collection of Brands
As the first unified home for a collection of L’Oréal’s west coast brands (NYX, Pulp Riot, Urban Decay and Youth To The People), the project needed to represent both the global L’Oréal name, as well as the unique aspects of the distinct California-based brands.
Connecting Cafe
L'Oréal's two-story work café serves as a dynamic heart of the expansive office, bringing energy and connection to the space. Flooded with natural light and infused with bold environmental graphics, the café offers a range of seating and dining options, thoughtfully designed to accommodate both individuals and collaborative teams.
An On-Site Academy
The project features L’Oréal’s first west coast professional academy, ProLAB which has a separate, public-facing entry.
The academy includes a full salon, three training studios, an artist lounge, a content studio, and a large, flexible event space for shows and large format training sessions. It has immediate access to the outdoor spaces for indoor / outdoor events.
An Ideal Partnership
“Hackman is an industry leader in adaptive reuse and creative office conversions. Given our experience, we knew that these pre-World War II era buildings on Douglas were truly special. L’Oréal being a fashion forward and iconic brand was the ideal company to take the design to the next level.
Successfully designing the interior of a creative office conversion is a complicated endeavor that requires high technical ability and excellent creative vision and Blitz was a perfect fit. The design freedom L’Oréal gave to Blitz allowed them to show off their skills and create an unparalleled and completely bespoke office environment.
Blitz was a wonderful partner and took the canvas we created and elevated it to match the high style and image the world has come to expect and appreciate of L’Oréal.”
