The collective path.

A field of functional spaces gathers to form a path between the university and the world. Moving through the plan the path evolves, shaping unique gathering spaces that define a diverse collective.

Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research (BAIR) Group’s new home on the entire 8th Floor of the Berkeley Way Building is now a collaborative and exciting space for more than 20 faculty and 120 students. Blitz engaged with a large Steering Committee and Working Group to gain consensus regarding the design. The new space includes “lablets” - embedded collaborative open research spaces inside the research facility. Supportive spaces supplement student and faculty creating an impressive destination/center piece for BAIR to host donors and guests.

Students are expected to benefit from collaboration with leading researchers in industrial research labs, as well as the availability of partner resources useful to investigate certain open questions in state-of-the-art AI research.

“Blitz helped us transition BAIR from lab spaces in four disparate buildings to a single unified home. They combined our specific engineering program needs with a meaningful spatial concept to create an exceptional space for our students, faculty, staff, and collaborators. The final product leverages cutting edge construction technology, including a raised floor and demountable walls, to create a suitable home for our world-class artificial intelligence program.”

- Scott E. SHACKLETON, Assistant Dean at UC Berkeley College of Engineering
